Olwal works at Sticks Furniture Company in the burning department, he has worked there for four years. He one day hopes to use his degree in law and political science to help the Sudanese people. Margrat is busy as a homemaker and hopes to find a job in the future and perhaps own her own retail business.
Olwal and Margrat have been in the United States for six years. They escaped Sudan through the UN refuge program. Olwal was a police officer in Sudan, and then he went to Egypt to study law and political science. He became targeted by the government because of his involvement with the student union, for speaking out against the government. During his exile in Egypt, his brother had to arrange his marriage with Margrat, because he could not return to Sudan. So Olwal and Margrat fled to the United States.
They have 3 children, Monyjok- meaning gift from God. Thangjok- creation of God, and Jeiebeen- all the people.
They currently live in low-income housing, in a rough neighborhood where they feel like their children cannot safely play. In their free time they like to socialize with fellow Sudanese families. They also enjoy family activities, like picnics and family diners. They found out about the program through other Sudanese families that have found success in Habitat. They are looking forward to having a quiet and safe place to live.
