Temesgen (“Tem”) & Lia were accepted in the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity homeownership program in December 2013 after learning about the program from their friends that are Habitat homeowners.
Tem and Lia both work at Calvin Community and enjoy interacting with the residents. They are the proud parents of one son, Amen (7). As a family they enjoy playing soccer and spending time together, whether it’s playing at the park or enjoying coffee. Continuing to stay involved in the community is very important to their family. Tem shared they look forward to becoming active and welcoming in their new neighborhood.
Originally from Eritrea, Tem spent eight years in a refugee camp in Cuba and Lia spent over a year in Ethiopia until moving to Des Moines in 2005. After meeting in Des Moines in 2005, they dreamed of a place to call their own. Tem and Lia expressed how they felt something was always missing from having to move around a lot and not being able to settle down. Now, they are proud homeowners and their lives feel complete.
